November 08 News 27th Nov 08 WELL - WHAT CAN I SAY.... I'M A LEGEND IS A LEGEND!!! WINNING AGAIN UNDER A 7LB PENALTY AT TAUNTON! (THAT'S A TOTAL OF 4 WINNERS FOR NEIL & LARKINGLASS IN NOVEMBER) Neil decided to run I'm A Legend at Taunton under a penalty after the Handicapper gave him 21lb for his win at Wincanton and what a great decision that turned out to be! I had to be content with watching the race on TV today but I was literally jumping up and down and shouting at the screen! This was a good competitive handicap...
What a ride Noel Fehily gave Legend - it was absolutely brilliant! A mention must also be made about our very talented young Trainer. The horses are all in sparkling form and running really well. There is an awful lot of work that goes on behind the scenes at Larkinglass that enable these great days to happen. It is a real team effort. Everyone in the yard plays a part. Congratulations to all the members of Wincanton Race Club and if Dennis, Helene, Kay or any of the other members want to add their comments or photos just email me on kaystone@btinternet.com 26th Nov 08 Today at Chepstow heralded the return to the track of Sula's Legend after a 599 day absence. He ran very well to finish 5th. The Racing Post said: Sula's Legend, who has changed stables since his last appearance back in April 2007, ran a pleasing race after his absence Also making her debut today was the lovely well bred Play A Cord. This was the newly formed Larkinglass Racing Club's first runner and she ran a cracker to finish 6th. If you would like more information on Larkinglass Racing Club please go to the Syndicates page or email kaystone@btinternet.com 25th Nov 08 Aconitum's Debut at Lingfield Aconitum was entered in the Juvenile Bumper at Lingfield which was the first race on the card. Dominic Elsworth gave him a fantastic ride and Aconitum appeared to enjoy himself immensely. He was very well behaved during the preliminaries and ran brilliantly to finish a very creditable fifth (beaten only 3 lengths) in what you can bet will turn out to be a competitive bumper. It will be well worth keeping an eye on the horses that finished ahead of Aconitum. This was also the debut run for the newly formed Larkinglass Racing Syndicate and a great day was had by all. There are still shares available in this wonderful horse at the original price of £850.00 for a twelfth share but get in quick if you are interested as I don't think they will hanging around for long! If you are interested in a share please contact me on kaystone@btinternet.com . The Racing Post said: Aconitum was getting the hang of things late on and it is fair to
expect a great deal of improvement from this debut run.
24th Nov 08 Neil sent out 4 Horses at Ludlow today - it is a busy old week with the yard sending out lots of runners. Cornell Precedent was first up but didn't like the ground and was pulled up. Next up was Charlie Poole in the
He finished ninth. The Racing Post said: Charlie Poole held up in mid-division, headway approaching 7th, led 9th, soon headed, weakened approaching 3 out We had two runners in the Bumper - Southfield Hall and Normandy Landings. Both horses ran well although Felix reported that he didn't think Norman was suited by the going which was Good to Soft. Southfield Hall finished 8th and Norman 11th. Here is what the RP had to say: Southfield Hall prominent until weakened over 3f out Normandy Landings raced wide, with leaders, weakened 3f out I was not able to go to Ludlow personally today so any reports or photos are more than welcome.
23rd Nov 08 COLONIAL JIM WINS AGAIN! THAT'S TWO WINS FOR JIMMY IN A WEEK AND THREE WINS FOR LARKINGLASS!! JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ Neil sent out three runners at Towcester today and ended up with a Winner and 2 Seconds - that's not bad going by anyone's standards is it ?! The weather was atrocious at times today especially during Maori Legend's race but it was a great feeling on the way home in the lorry with a winner and 2 seconds in the back! What a DAY!!! It was Tosula's seasonal debut today in the
on ground that was very soft in places. She looked beautiful in the paddock and ran an absolute cracker to finish 2nd. Mike Burbidge was there to watch her run. Felix gave her a really good ride. Tosula stayed on gamely up the hill carrying top weight and there will be improvement to come from this lovely mare. Here is what the RP had to say: A combination of overnight snow and morning rain has ensured the
going was testing. Tosula showed some reasonable form for Paul Keane last
winter on good ground, but handled this surface pretty well on his first start
for his new trainer.
Maori Legend ran next in the
She also ran brilliantly in ground that was really soft and hard work for the horses. Maori Legend was also carrying top weight. We held our breath over the first fence but after that she got into her stride and again she stayed on well up the hill and only got beaten by a neck. Maori Legend belongs to Helen Cross who was there to see her beautiful mare's seasonal debut. Helen was really pleased to see Maori Legend do so well. Helen also owns Winsley Hill who is Maori Legend's full sister and both these mares seem to be real triers. The RP said: Maori Legend had rather lost her way since winning successive races on
soft ground last winter, including over course and distance, but this was much
better on her first outing since May and she might have got there had not the
winner run across her bows after the last. However, she is still 8lb above her
last winning mark and will need to at least match this to get back into the
winner's enclosure.
Colonial Jim was next up in the
Jimmy made "mincemeat" of the field again only a week after winning so
decisively at Fontwell. Felix was on board again and gave Jimmy a very confident
ride all the way round - just easing ahead in the run-in to take the race. Our
sincere congratulations go to Richard and all of Jimmy's Owners who live in the
USA. You can be really proud of him! The RP had this to say: This moderate
hurdle was all about COLONIAL JIM, who was well backed and duly landed
the odds in cheeky fashion. His task was made easier by the early exits of his
market rivals Ice Melted and Silver Bay, and he was never off the
bridle before easing to the front after the final flight. He is clearly
improving and confidence will be high after this.
20th Nov 08 J 2 Winners in 5 Days!! J I'm A Legend Wins At Wincanton! Wincanton Alfatrix was first off for the yard today running in the first race which was a Novice Hurdle. He completed in 6th place and we will now have to wait to see whether the handicapper will give him a mark or whether he will have to run once more as in his first race he managed to unseat Liam and that run might not count towards his mark. This is what the Racing Post had to say: Alfatrix mid-division, headway after 6th, effort after 3 out, soon weakened, tailed off Next up was I'M A LEGEND ridden by Choc Thornton and owned by Wincanton Race Club. I'M A LEGEND was held up in rear division and ran very wide at some stages as Choc tried to find the better ground. When I'M A LEGEND was asked for his run on the final top bend he powered away with Choc not even having to move a muscle. This was a very impressive 12 length victory! I was privileged to be in the paddock to help welcome the winner home and all the members of Wincanton Race Club were so happy and pleased, their emotion was palpable!
Neil leading in his 2nd Winner in 5 days ( and yes he did smile!)
A very happy Wincanton Race Club with I'm A Legend and Jockey Robert Thornton and being presented with their prize. Courtesy of Racing Post: Not many of these arrived at the height of their powers, so one would imagine that this race will not produce too many winners in the short term. The early pace was not very strong. I'M A LEGEND has raced mainly at 2m since December last year and had never really proven that he stays this far, from limited attempts. However, he was given a really patient ride early before running right away from some tired rivals (he also appeared to be kept away from the bulk of the runners throughout). This success came off a higher mark than his only previous win, so he will need to improve again. L The Highs and Lows of Racing! L Topless ran in the next race after I'm A Legend's triumph and I was seriously asking myself if we were about to witness Neil's first double as a Trainer. Those of you that follow Neil's horses will remember that on the 5th November that Topless "unseated the rider" at Chepstow and those of you that saw the race will also know that the horse had no where to go at the time and that "Brought Down" would have been a fairer analysis. Well today the analysts have no choice but to say "Brought Down". There was absolute carnage at the 14th fence where 4 horses departed from the race including Topless who again was very unlucky and had no where to go when horses fell in front of her. She made her way back to the lorry park/stable yard none the worse for wear and lives to fight another day. Topless looked fabulous in the paddock beforehand...

Hereford Liz drove all the way to Hereford with another 3 runners from Larkinglass. Faraday was first up in the
Faraday finished sixth. This is what the RP had to say: Faraday, a failed gamble for an all-weather handicap since his chasing debut, did not achieve much back in sixth and again his jumping left something to be desired. Next up was Keepholdin in the
He finished 12th - this is what the RP had to say: Keepholdin held up in touch, weakened 3 out, tailed off Barton Lora ran in the Mare's Maiden Bumper. She ran well for most of the way and it was a promising run. The RP said: Barton Lora prominent until weakened 2f out If anyone wants to send in a report from Hereford and any photos taken on the day - they will be gratefully received... 17th Nov 08 Two runners today at Leicester - Rinnwood Lass and National Diploma. Rinnwood Lass went in the first race at Leicester - the Stonesby Mares' Novices' Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) (3yo+,0-100) 12 hdles (2m4f110y). She finished twelve and this is what the Racing Post had to say: Rinnwood Lass held up, mistake 4th, effort 7th, soon weakened. National Diploma went next in the Castle Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Chase (Class 5) (4yo+,0-95) 15 fences (2m4f110y). He eventually finished eighth which was a much better effort than the last two runs where he pulled up. So that was quite pleasing. Here is what the Racing Post had to say: National Diploma mid-division, headway 7th, weakened after 4 out
16th Nov 08 WINNER! WINNER! WINNER! COLONIAL JIM WINS AT FONTWELL! Colonial Jim romped home by 8 lengths in the first at Fontwell. This was a very welcome winner for the yard and our many congratulations go to all the connections. Felix gave Colonial Jim a fantastic ride and the horse jumped well throughout making up ground at each hurdle. It was a brilliant win for the yard and very well deserved! And whoever backed him well done! Neil, Liz and Yana (who led him up) were all really pleased to say the least. Look out for him to come out again quite soon to try and get a race before the handicapper catches up with him.
Something that quite often goes unmentioned is the effect that the horses have, when they win or lose, on the stable lads and lasses. Below is an email that I received tonight from one of the girls who help to look after and ride Colonial Jim - I have deliberately left it as anonymous to spare blushes but when I read it I could feel the emotion behind it so I had to put it on here!
Hi Kay
Courtesy of At The Races: A dry, bright day after just 1mm of overnight rain and conditions look fairly
testing, backed up by the time of this opening novice hurdle, which was some
32secs slower than Racing Post Standard. Although this wasn't a strong novices'
handicap by any means, that does suggest conditions are probably a bit more
testing than the official description. COLONIAL JIM's new connections
clearly thought they had a well handicapped horse on their hands and the lightly
raced 5yo landed a right old gamble, having been backed into 7-1 from an opening
show of 25-1. Given a very confident ride by Felix de Giles, he was never too
far off the pace and travelled and jumped smoothly around the inside before
being asked to go in pursuit of Orchard House, who poached an easy lead
approaching the home turn. Soon hot on the leaders' heels, he proved far too
strong up the straight, running right away from the runner-up after the final
flight, with the first two well clear of the rest, and he would have to be of
strong interest if turned out under a penalty before being reassessed, because
he is clearly way ahead of the handicapper. 13th Nov 08 Merlins Mate made his debut at Ludlow in the bumper on soft ground ridden by James Davies. He ran a very creditable race given the ground finishing 7th @ 66/1. If anyone has any photos of Merlins Mate or anything further to report please email me. Courtesy of At The Races: mid-division, headway over 5f out, weakened over 3f out We still have a few shares left in Aconitum - please email me on kaystone@btinternet.com if you are interested. Thank you! 9th Nov 08 The last week has been a really busy one with runners everyday apart from yesterday (Saturday). Rinnwood Lass ran at Towcester on the 6th Nov with Liam Heard riding. This was her first outing of the season and she finished 9th. Cornell Precedent and Classical Act both ran at Fontwell on Friday with Dougie Costello riding both horses. Cornell Precedent was dropped in class into a seller for the first time and finished 6th. Classical Act was making her debut in the Bumper. She finished 8th out of 14 but could have got much closer but she was hampered 5f out and she never really recovered from that but she will be worth keeping an eye on next time out. Today was You Know Bridie's first outing of the season at Hereford. Felix de Giles gave her a really good ride to finish 4th. Courtesy of Racing Post: You Know Bridie was given a really good waiting ride on her first start of the season but never quite got on terms. On quicker ground, and ridden in a similar way, she has a race in her. 5th Nov 08 Remember remember the 5th November!! But probably for the wrong reasons! Topless ran at Chepstow today, ridden today by Felix de Giles. She was very fresh and messed up the first fence but after that was travelling and jumping like an absolute dream...until the 9th fence...when Timmy Murphy's mount fell right in front of her and she had no where to go and was (in my opinion) brought down...however this is what the Racing Post had to say... Topless towards rear, blundered badly 1st, headway 7th, weakened 8th, badly hampered and unseated rider 9th I think to say that Felix was unseated is very unfair - he had absolutely no chance of staying on board. Anyway, Topless lives to fight another day and that is what is important.
Also running today was Peacefull Waters ridden by James Davies. He ran a really good race eventually finishing 10th. This was his second run for Neil and I expect we will see him out quite soon again all being well after today. Courtesy of Racing Post: Peacefull Waters led until after 1st, led approaching 3rd until after 3 out, weakened approaching last
Peacefull Waters at Chepstow 4th Nov 08 The day was spent at Exeter. Neil sent three runners - two in the first and one in the last! A really nice day was had by all with the horses running with promise. First up were Alfatrix and Imoncloudnine. Alfatrix, ridden by Liam Heard, ran very well this time finishing a very creditable sixth. Liam gave him an excellent ride. His SP was 200/1 - what an insult! His Owners Peter and Jackie were very pleased with the huge improvement from this beautiful horse. I think Peter might be sending his own report in for today - so watch this space! Imoncloudnine completed safe and sound. Courtesy of Racing Post: Alfatrix held up in touch, weakened 2 out I“Moncloudnine ridden 5th, always in rear
In the final race, Neil saddled Lady Clarke's Midnight Chase, ridden by James Davies. Midnight Chase is a great favourite of Steph who looks after him. He looked fabulous in the paddock and ran a cracker to finish 5th. This was only the horses 3rd race and shows great promise for the future. It might be worth mentioning here that this horse won on his debut ridden by the one and only Neil Mulholland! Courtesy of Racing Post: Midnight Chase, who beat the useful Platin Grounds on his hurdles
debut, was well down the field on his recent return at Aintree and ran much
better here. He clearly retains some of his ability and may soon be of interest
for something over shorter. 3rd Nov 08 Neil had runners at both Plumpton and Warwick today. Plumpton: Courtesy of Racing Post: National Diploma in touch, mistake 7th, weakened 14th, very tired in last when pulled up before 2 out
Ruby was next up for Neil in the Bumper in her eagerly awaited seasonal reappearance. She looked a picture being tacked up and also in the paddock. I spotted a couple of Trainers in the paddock taking a sneaky look! Ruby ran a cracker today in soft ground. She near enough made all and was overtaken on the run-in by Balthazar King. Ruby had a good blow after the race so there is probably some improvement to come. So that's two runs and two seconds - not too bad! Courtesy of Racing Post: The early pace was steady in the bumper, Rhinestone Ruby attempted to make a
winning move on the final circuit to which three horses responded, and these
four finished clear. Rhinestone Ruby set out to make all, and injected
some pace at the top of the hill on the final circuit in an attempt to catch her
rivals napping and only gave way under pressure in the closing stages. She will
come into her own when sent over fences.
Warwick: If anyone was at Warwick and wants to put in a report - please email it to me at kaystone@btinternet.com Courtesy of Racing Post: Keepholdin always in rear, tailed off when pulled up before 3 out Spiritual Society took keen hold in touch, stumbled 1st, 2 lengths 3rd when fell 6th I'm A Legend, who put up another fair effort after his encouraging
return to action last month, held up towards rear, mistake 4th, headway
approaching 5th, weakened flat 1st Nov 08 After coming 4th at Cheltenham a couple of weeks ago, Winsley Hill earned the chance to run in the bet365 Best Odds Guaranteed Mares' Hurdle (Listed Race) (Class 1) at Wetherby. Winsley Hill ran very gamely as usual coming a very well deserved 4th. Courtesy of Racing Post: Winsley Hill
