I want to mention Neil's first season as a Trainer. He finished 54 out of about a 1000 in the trainer's table with a total of 17 winners (16 NH 1 Flat). How brilliant is that! If you have never seen the trainers table - take time to have a look at the statistics page on the Racing Post website and you will realise how well Neil did in his first season. There are lots of other trainers on that table that would have been very pleased to have finished where Neil did - so congratulations to Neil, Liz, Georgie, Johnnie and all the team at Larkinglass. Everyone played a part in the yard's success but a special WELL DONE to Neil!

Just a little update for the last weeks racing...Neil has had 2 runners. I'm A Legend ran in a chase at Stratford on 22nd May but was pulled up by jockey Robert Thornton who thought that Legend was not jumping as well as he might and Merlin's Mate ran at Fontwell and he also pulled up. He was ridden by Daryl Jacob. Both horses were well supported by Connections and there are some photos below from both meetings.

Dolly Will Do had her third maiden run at Salisbury tonight finishing 8th. This now qualifies her for a handicap mark. She will have a little holiday now and we will see her in a nursery race soon. Owners - Brian and Pat Makepeace and Tony Di Lieto & Family were there to support Dolly. We would welcome some more syndicate Owners for this lovely filly.

WINSLEY HILL WINS AT EXETER!

Winsley Hill put her rivals to the sword at Exeter today winning by 20 lengths in the 3m Novice's Chase. This was a very impressive win with Winsley Hill winning in a canter with her ears pricked - she looked like she would happily have gone around again! Daryl Jacob gave her a peach of a ride all the way! This is a very genuine mare who always tries her best for her Owner/Breeder Mrs Helen Cross.

This was Neil's first winner of the new season. It was at this meeting last year that Winsley Hill won over hurdles making her Neil's first ever winner under rules as a Trainer and for that she will always hold a very special place in his heart. He calls her his "Larkinglass Princess". The RP said:

WINSLEY HILL jumped comfortably at the steady pace, moved up to stalk the leader coming round the final turn, and picked off that rival with ease to cruise clear. Though she had won over 2m as a hurdler last year, she had been caught out by the pace at a shorter distance on her chasing debut and her jumping suffered as a result. Racing at a slower pace over a longer trip on a stiff track was much more manageable for her, and she will progress from this experience. She will be kept going over the summer as this genuine mare loves fast ground.

Neil took 6 runners to Wincanton this evening. Faraday was first up in the Handicap Chase (Class 4) ridden by James Davies. He took a keen hold and was prominent until lost place at the 9th, he was then tailed off when pulled up before 2 out.

Fabulous Faraday

We then had two runners in the Novices Hurdle (Class 4). Classical Act ridden by Charlie Huxley raced in the rear until pulled up before 8th. Hobb's Dream made a much better effort this time finishing 8th. Connections were pleased with the result as she hadn't really done very well before.

Roofing Spirit, ridden by Daryl Jacob, was entered in the class 3 chase over 3m 1f which is a longer trip than normal and he didn't get home and was pulled up 3 out.

Merlin's Mate (Arthur) was having his first run over hurdles. He was handled very well by Tom Scudamore and after a little scare at the 2nd last hurdle made it home safe and sound to finish in 7th place.

Last but not least was Rhinestone Ruby. She ran in the very competitive 2m handicap hurdle and hopes were high for a good run after she was placed 2nd over course and distance last week. Robert Thornton was again aboard and had suggested that we try her in a softer bit....well to be honest it didn't work as she reverted back to her old self and tanked over the first two hurdles and the race was lost. Ruby is back safe and sound and will now have another go in about 3-4 weeks time with her mylor bit back in!

After racing a few of us stayed to listen to the Abba Tribute band and Fleur loved it most of all!

Fleur enjoying the music!

Dolly Will Do and Clovis both ran at Bath today. Dolly was having her second run in a 5f maiden for the Larkinglass Racing 2 syndicate and ran on very well to finish a creditable fifth in a race where the winner was very highly regarded. Dolly was only beaten 8 lengths. This was an improvement on her debut and we can look forward to further improvement. There are shares available in Dolly at £500.00 per share (12 Owners Max). Please phone Kay on 01980 862574 for further information.

Dolly Will Do

Clovis also ran at Bath in the 1m 2f class 6 handicap. Although Clovis finished in 8th position, he was only beaten 5 lengths. Clovis stayed on gamely at the finish.

WINSLEY HILL 3RD AT FONTWELL IN HER DEBUT CHASE

Winsley Hill jumped very well to finish 3rd under Daryl Jacob in the

Spearmint Rhino Rouge Gentlemen“s Club Brighton Beginners“ Chase
(Class 4) (5yo+) 2m2f Good 13 fences

This was her first go over fences in public. Daryl reported back that she probably needs to go a little further in distance now that she is running over fences. It is worth noting however that the winner was rated 142 over hurdles against Winsley Hill rated 115 and Winsley was only beaten 12 lengths. Winsley Hill is a game mare who always tries her best for her owner Helen Cross and she galloped all the way to the line again tonight. The RP said: Winsley Hill had disappointed in a couple of runs over hurdles following a break and she was well held on this chasing debut, although she was staying on late. Mares“ only races could suit her.

Wonderful Winsley Hill with Christina who won the best turned out prize.
